The BBC has faced a backlash after using the World Cup final’s half-time break to promote the television licence fee. The advert, titled “What has the BBC ever done for me?”, stars comedian Romesh Ranganathan alongside well-known BBC personalities including Sir David Attenborough and Mary Berry. It attempts to highlight the programmes and services funded by the licence fee. However, angry viewers branded the campaign “desperate” and “propaganda”, with some saying it had convinced them to cancel their licence. Critics also questioned how much the advert cost to produce. A standard television licence currently costs £180 a year. It is required to watch or record live television on any channel or use BBC iPlayer. The row comes as the Government considers reforms to the BBC’s funding system through its ongoing Royal Charter review.
