Katherine Howard (c. 152?–1542) was the fifth wife of King Henry VIII of England. She was the cousin of Anne Boleyn and came from the influential Howard family, though her immediate branch was not wealthy. In 1540, shortly after Henry’s annulment from Anne of Cleves, Katherine—still a teenager—married the king, who was in his late forties and in poor health. Henry was enchanted by her youth and liveliness, calling her his “rose without a thorn.” However, her past relationships with Henry Manox and Francis Dereham resurfaced, and rumors spread that she was also involved with Thomas Culpeper, a courtier. These revelations destroyed her reputation. In 1542, accused of adultery and treason, Katherine Howard was executed at the Tower of London.
