The story of the musical is set in the 1890s, and is about a nonchalant young lawyer (Frank Sinatra) and the owner of a Montmarte dance hall (Shirley MacLaine), who clashes with the police because of her performances of the then-illegal dance known as the "can-can". In 1960, 20th Century Fox made a film version, which was shot in the widescreen 65mm/70mm format known as "Todd-AO" [the Todd-AO credit was intact on all releases of the film version, including the 1977 VHS and the 2007 DVD].
