First published in 2017 by HarperCollins (UK). This is Mark Lawrence’s third trilogy to date, a trilogy of trilogies, if you will. His previous two trilogies, The Broken Empire, and The Red Queen’s War, are both award-winning, critically acclaimed, sold by the castle load and translated into 20 languages. So no pressure then. ‘Red Sister’ focuses on Nona Grey (pronounced No na according to Mark Lawrence, and he should know), a young girl who is falsely accused of a horrific murder is saved from the hangman’s noose to a rather surprising person. With no connection, a Sister of the Convent of Sweet Mercy, who raise young girls, such as Nona, to be killers. Yes, you read right, killers. It’s in the brutal life training to be a sister, that Nona has to struggle with not only the demanding teachings fro the nuns but her own classmates. Red Sister is a story of one’s own sense of self and being in the world. A story of discovering identity and just what resources a person has to utilise in order to survive and make sense of a confusing and strange way of life. Above all, it is a story of friendships that forge between people because of the circumstances that have befallen them and the surprise of how loyal they can be. ‘Red Sister’ is an intense, deep and thought provoking story that envelops the reader and does not let go until it wants to. And it doesn’t want to. If you’re going to read Red Sister, take a deep breath. I’ve had the joy of reading The Broken Empire trilogy, as Jorg brutally tries to claim power no matter whom he crushes. I’ve not read The Red Queen’s War. So to jump to his latest work was a surprise I wasn’t expecting. I’ll be hunkering down with The Red Queen’s War and I’m sure I won’t be disappointed.
