In this video, we take real-life situations and show how could have, should have, would have, may/might have, must have work in everyday English. You’ll hear practical stories, mistakes students make, and how to correct them so you sound clear, confident, and fluent. In the video, we start by explaining that Modals + Perfect (modal + have + past participle) are used to talk about the past — not the present or future. I introduce the main idea: these structures help us talk about what was possible, what didn’t happen, what would have happened, or what we can logically conclude about a past event. We begin with a real-life example: A student tells me, “I didn’t study enough for the exam.” I show him how to change this into a modal perfect: “I should have studied more.” This expresses regret — the action is finished, but the feeling remains. Next, we talk about missed opportunities using could have. For example: “You could have called me earlier.” This means the opportunity existed, but it didn’t happen. Then we move into imagined outcomes with would have. Example: “If she had woken up earlier, she would have caught the bus.” This helps learners connect conditionals to modal perfects. We go deeper into logical deduction using must have and might have. If your friend didn’t answer for 6 hours, you might say: “He must have been busy.” Or if you’re not sure: “He might have forgotten his phone.” Throughout the lesson, I guide the learner with visuals, timelines, and my usual step-by-step method. We finish the video with spoken practice, where the viewer repeats full sentences using the correct structure, building fluency and confidence.
