The song was written by Roe and Freddy Weller, and the record was produced by Steve Barri. This was Tommy's 13th Hot 100 single and his eighth Top 40, fifth Top Ten, and second No. 1. He scored an additional nine Hot 100 singles including three more Top '40s and one more Top Ten for a total of 22 Hot 100 entries between 1962-73.
