Having a game of chess in a park sounds like a perfectly safe activity to do in beautiful surroundings, and You would be absolutely right to think this. That is unless you played chess in Bitsa Park, Russia, in the early 2000s. During this period, the locals were terrified to even go into Bitsa Park, especially at nighttime, because the ‘Bitsa Park Maniac’ was on the loose. An anonymous serial killer would stalk their victims through the woods before bludgeoning them over the head with a hammer. Once caught, police found the killer’s chessboard, which had 61 out of the 64 squares numbered, indicating they had killed 61 victims. The alias of the Bitsa Park Maniac quickly changed to ‘the chessboard killer’, and Alexander Pichushkin was on his way to being recognised as Russia’s new most prolific serial killer, or so he thought.
