El Paso opens healing center following shooting

(6 Aug 2019) El Paso officials opened a grief center on Tuesday to help people cope with last weekend's mass shooting at a Walmart, in which 22 people were killed and many others were wounded. Democratic Rep. Veronica Escobar visited the Family Assistance Center downtown, saying "we've got to make sure that folks have access to mental health care. "A lot of children saw things that no human being should see," Escobar told reporters outside the building. Officials say the new grief center will offer counseling, travel assistance and financial support to anyone who needs it. Escobar also said she planned to meet later Tuesday with Walmart's chief executive to discuss the employees affected by the shooting. "There's a lot of people who work there who haven't been able to go to work, obviously, because it's a crime scene. But they depend on their paychecks for paying their tuition, for paying their utility bills, for paying their rent," the congresswoman said.
