XIAO CHUA ANNOTATES INDEPENDENCE DAY PARADE 4 of 7, ABS-CBN News Channel, 12 June 2010

Michael Charleston "Xiao" B. Chua of the De La Salle University, Vice President of the Philippine Historical Association, annotates the 112th Philippine Independence Day parade on 12 June 2010, the last in the Arroyo Administration, with ANC's Lia Andanar-Yu. The first part of the video shows scenes after the Independence Day Flag Raising at the Independence Flagpole of the Rizal Park led by President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo. It shows among the crowd Xiao and the board members of the Philippine Historical Association near the flagpole. --- This is my second time to be part of Independence Day coverages (last year I did Kalayaan 2009 for NBN 4), and was glad to see a return of the civic-military parade which Pres. Arroyo replaced with the yearly job fairs, to remind us of our heroes in government. These festivities I used to watch when I was a kid in the 1990s, the most memorable one was Ambeth Ocampo giving a great annotation to the Philippine Centennial grand parade in 1998. This year, Lia and I reflected on our country's symbols--the flag and national anthem, our concept of kalayaan and kaginhawaan, and the importance of the study of history in our won perspective against the colonial perspective. I enjoyed our two-hour conversation and was glad I can be of help again. I said let's give it to the president to let the country reflect on her legacy but we should not forget our history and the heroes who died so that we could have true kalayaan based on kaginhawaan ang mabuting kalooban.
