SNP choose alternative options to Nicola Sturgeon's 'de facto indyref at next general election'

The SNP's ruling National Executive Committee has decided to put two options to its membership, both differ to Nicola Sturgeon's statement that she would treat the next UK general election as a defacto referendum on independence. The first option would be to seek a positive result at the next Westminster election to try and secure permission from the UK government to hold another referendum. If that failed, the SNP would treat the next Scottish elections as a de facto referendum for independence, then seeking negotiations with the UK government if a majority of votes were cast for pro-independence parties. The First Minister's option of treating the UK general election as a de facto referendum will also be up for discussion, but is not favoured. Nicola Sturgeon made the pledge to do so after the UK Supreme Court ruled in November the Scottish Parliament does not have the power to hold another vote on the issue. Now the SNP’s National Executive Committee has laid out its alternative Holyrood 2026 option. At its meeting yesterday, the NEC unanimously agreed the wording of a draft resolution to be debated at a Special Democracy Conference in March. It will decide the way forward to secure independence and Ms Sturgeon said the resolution seeks to enable a “full, free and open” debate.
