Former US Representative George Santos reaches plea deal with prosecutors for fraud charges

Former US Representative George Santos pleaded guilty on August 19 to wire fraud and aggravated identity theft, marking a significant downfall for the once-promising politician. Santos, 36, who was expelled from Congress last year, acknowledged his role in fabricating fundraising figures to deceive donors and the Republican Party during the 2022 election cycle. In a Long Island courtroom, Santos apologized to his constituents. He could face up to 22 years in prison, with sentencing set for February 7, 2025. As part of a plea deal, he waived his right to appeal any sentence shorter than 95 months, or just under eight years.
