European countries begin evacuation flights from coup-hit Niger

Hundreds of foreigners have fled Niger on planes sent by France and Italy. Most of the evacuees are Europeans, but Japan said two of its citizens had managed to get on the flights. South Korea is also advising its nationals to leave the West African country. The security situation has been uncertain since armed forces staged a coup last week, deposing President Mohamed Bazoum. Paris had earlier said it decided to pull citizens out of Niger after protesters attacked the French embassy. Commercial flights have been cancelled since last Wednesday.
