Algerians in French eyes: "from Homo Islamicus to Homo economicus" by Muriam Haleh Davis

Muriam Haleh Davis is one of the few historians in the US working on contemporary North Africa, combining an analysis of French colonial legacies with an incisive understanding of national identities, critical race theory, and political economy. Her research interests focus on development, decolonization and race in North Africa. Her first book, Markets of Civilization: Islam and Racial Capitalism in Algeria will be published with Duke University Press in 2022. Professor Haleh Davis maps the colonizing commitment of French occupiers to transform the Algerian landscape of political economy and subjectivity from Homo Islamicus to Homo economicus, from a ‘traditional’ religiously and racially driven to a ‘modern’ economic subject.
