AAHIAH episode #12: “BLACK SOLDIERS [PART 3] - THE TRUMAN YEARS”

Black soldiers returning home from World War II found a country that still refused to grant them full rights. Rights they had more than earned due to their military service and sacrifices. But after the war, more and more African Americans challenged the status quo of segregation. A movement for the expansion of civil rights had been born...And was growing. On June 28, 1947, President Harry S. Truman became the first sitting president to address the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). From the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, Truman pledged his support for upholding the civil rights of all Americans. Truman desegregated the military in July 1948. _____________________ The African American History Is AMERICAN History Video Series Channel on YouTube is an eclectic program that includes "old-time radio" style storytelling of historical events and bios of unsung heroes, guest interviews on both historical AND contemporary topics, music, and commentary.
