Typhoid spreads itself from one person to another through feco-oral route. Infected (by feces of an infected person) water or food consumed by another person causes typhoid fever. Symptoms: Fever, body ache, skin rash, abdominal pain, anorexia are the main symptoms of typhoid fever. Skin rash in typhoid fever is called rose spots. In children it may cause diarrhea or constipation. Diagnosis: Blood culture, stool culture, Serology- blood test known as widal. Medicines given for treatment: Paracetamol, chloramphenicol, ciprofloxacine, metronidazole, cefixime, ceftriaxone, intravenous fluid, multivitamin. Prevention: hygienic food and clean drinking water, water treatment plant, sewage plant management, proper maintenance of water distribution network, proper food handling. Vaccines: Vaccines are available. They don't protect life time. Repeat doses are required on regular interval. It is not included in national recommended vaccination schedule in India.
