Israel’s military operation in Gaza last year left more than 2 000 people dead, damaged thousands of buildings, including schools and businesses, and damaged agricultural lands and assets. Farmers who had been working in what is known as the ARA (Access Restricted Area) on the eastern side of the Gaza strip, along the border with Israel, were especially badly affected. The European Commission's humanitarian partner, PU-Ami (Première Urgence-Aide Médicale Internationale) had been working with Palestinian farmers in the area before the conflict. As a result of the war, almost all farmers lost their assets and tools. Over the past year, PU-Ami has been helping farmers to set up new irrigation networks, providing them with farming tools and seeds so they can start once again to be self-supporting.
