After escaping from Egypt by stealing a German Junkers Ju-52, Agent One and B.J. Blazkowicz go after Helga von Bülow. As they approach Castle Wolfenstein, nestled in the Harz Mountains, the duo is shot down by anti-aircraft defense, and their plane crashes in the heart of Germany. Captured by Helga von Bülow's troops, the two agents are taken to Castle Wolfenstein to be held and interrogated. While Agent One succumbs during the interrogation of the dreaded Dr. Zee, Blazkowicz manages to knock out a guard and escape from his cell. The player's goal is now to escape from the detention dungeon, and find a way to reach the lower keep. Blazkowicz will have to go through a succession of courtyards, occasionally climbing onto castle battlements, while eliminating Heer soldiers who get in his way. This level - being the starting level of the original PC version of the game - is probably the most emblematic of the game. It allowed the player to get familiar with the controls, and set the stage for the game's plot. The player could - at will - choose to escape discreetly (up to a point, however, since the game's script required that the player's presence be inevitably revealed), or to use brute force to reach the end of the level.
