Protecting our kids' safety online is back on Congress' agenda. Lawmakers want to pass a bill forcing tech companies to change how they design products for younger users. Just last week, child safety advocates testified before a Senate committee. The Senate Judiciary Committee is taking aim at Big Tech, demanding accountability. Members blame social media companies for feeding teens content that promotes bullying, drug abuse, eating disorders, and even suicide. Senator Lindsey Graham says, "This is an epidemic, a mental health crisis, particularly for young teenage girls. We have no system in place to empower parents and empower consumers to seek justice, fight back, and protect themselves." Emma Lembke testified that she created an Instagram account at age 12, and spent more than 6 hours a day scrolling through apps. Lembke says, "As I began to spend more time online, I was met with a harsh reality. Social media was not magic. It was an illusion. A product that was predicated on maximizing my attention at the cost of my well being." Now a college sophomore she has started "Log Off," a nonprofit to spur dialogue among young people feeling the effects of social media. Capitol Hill Correspondent, Erik Rosales reports.
