Austin Firefighter Fights Workers’ Comp Denial Over Cancer

An Austin firefighter is fighting for change after her workers’ compensation claim was denied following a terminal endometrial cancer diagnosis. Suzanne Lafollette has served nearly two decades on the job and believes exposure to carcinogens while firefighting contributed to her illness. While Texas law includes presumptive coverage for certain cancers affecting male firefighters, female reproductive cancers are not currently covered at the state level. Lafollette is now appealing her claim and pushing lawmakers to update the law to protect more women in the fire service.
