Japan against Germany and this time Japan against Spain. So I saw all the matches in this qualifying, and it's a historical victory I saw twice, so for me, it's really a miracle, but I think Japan team prepared (for) the world for two, three decades, so now it's getting stronger." 11. SOUNDBITE (English) Natcho Romero, Spanish fan and national: "(Contradicting) Feelings, because, at least we qualified, we are second in the group so we are happy, but the performance tonight was not the best. We had the chances in the first half and we couldn't make the second goal and they came back. So it was a fair enough victory for them, congratulations to Japan, they played very well two games, they beat Germany and Spain. They deserve to go through, so the best of luck and hopefully we can see them in the final now.” 17. Spanish fans leaving stadium 18. SOUNDBITE (English) Diego Rose, Spanish fan and national: “We are sad because the match was not good, but now we want to win to (against) Morocco. So for today it's OK, we are happy.” 19. Various of fans leaving stadium STORYLINE: Japanese and Spanish fans celebrated their teams reaching the last 16 on Thursday as they were leaving Khalifa International Stadium. Draped in their team's football paraphernalia, Spanish and especially Japanese fans were in a buoyant mood as they left the stadium. "A historical victory I saw twice, so for me, it's really a miracle,” said Japanese fan Takanori Suzuki, referring also to Japan's earlier shock win over Germany in the same stadium. “At least we qualified, we are second in the group so we are happy, but the performance tonight was not the best," Spanish fan Natcho Romero said. Japan scored twice early in the second half to come from behind to defeat Spain 2-1 in a result that put both teams into the last 16 of the World Cup. Ao Tanaka scored the winning goal from close range early in the second half. It took about two minutes for video review officials to confirm the ball hadn’t gone out of bounds before the goal. Álvaro Morata scored first for Spain in the 11th minute, but Japan rallied after halftime. Ritsu Doan equalized in the 48th with a left-footed shot from outside the box, and Tanaka added the second one three minutes later. Germany was eliminated from the tournament despite a 4-2 win over Costa Rica in the other Group E match. A victory by Costa Rica would have eliminated Spain.
