In today’s video, I’m going to show you how to clone a fig tree quickly and easily using air layering. This is one of the most reliable propagation methods and is widely used by home gardeners across America and Europe because it delivers strong roots and a high success rate. Air layering allows you to create a new fig tree without cutting it off from the parent plant right away. This means the branch continues receiving nutrients while roots develop, making this method perfect for beginners. First, select a healthy fig branch that is about pencil thickness and actively growing. Avoid very young or woody branches, as they do not root as well. A healthy branch is the key to successful fig tree cloning. Next, remove a small ring of bark from the selected area. This step encourages the plant to produce roots at that point. Be careful to remove only the outer bark and not damage the inner wood. Now wrap the exposed area with moist soil or coco peat. Make sure the material is damp but not dripping wet. Cover it tightly with plastic and secure both ends so moisture stays inside. Over the next few weeks, keep an eye on the air layer and make sure it stays moist. In warm conditions, you will start seeing healthy white roots forming inside the wrap. This is a clear sign that your fig tree cloning process is working. Once strong roots have developed, carefully cut the branch below the rooted area and plant it in a pot with well-draining soil. Keep the new fig plant in a shaded area for a few days and water lightly.
