Football Team Brings Community Hope
ROBBINSVILLE, N.C. -- Robbinsville High School s football team is bringing hope to a mountain town that's seen some bad luck recently. Robbinsville s team plays for a shot at getting into the state championships Friday night against Alleghany. It s a bright spot for the town, considering Graham County's high unemployment rate, especially since the closure of Stanley Furniture put hundreds of people out of work. But a new company, Oak Valley Hardwoods is taking over the plant and bringing more than one hundred jobs. County leaders say the winning football team, adds a sense of momentum to the town. We ve had a lot of good news coming into Graham County recently and we're looking forward to more good news coming, County Manager Greg Cable said. Black Knight players say the team brings hope to the community. Us being as successful as we have been makes the town proud of us and it gets everybody back out where they want to come watch, Quarterback Skyler Matheson said. The community rallies behind them and they rally behind the community to really bring a lot more hope, Cable said. Lavetta Roper runs Mountain Memories in Robbinsville. She says the big time success of the football team helps local business. We sell Black Knight T-shirts. We sell the hoodies and earrings. I mean, we have everything we could possibly get that's in the Black Knights...Oh yeah, it helps.
