Man arrested in Hellertown for crash that killed Jewish couple, premature child

HELLERTOWN, Pa. - The man wanted for a hit-and-run crash that killed a family in New York City turned himself in to authorities in Northampton County on Wednesday. State Police said Julio Acevedo, also known as Julio Martinez, 44, of Brooklyn turned himself into Pennsylvania State Police in Hellertown. He was arraigned around 9:30 p.m. Wednesday night with a charge of being a fugitive of justice. He will appear in Lehigh County court Thursday morning for a chance to waive his extradition hearing. Acevedo is accused of speeding through Brooklyn and hitting a vehicle with a husband and his pregnant wife, Nachman and Raizy Glauber, both 21, early Sunday morning. The couple died. Their premature baby was delivered by paramedics after the crash, but the baby died Monday. 69 News was there Wednesday afternoon as Acevedo surrendered to New York City police at a Turkey Hill convenience store on Route 412 in Hellertown. He was handcuffed and escorted into another vehicle with New York license plates at the Park and Ride just down Route 412. A friend of the driver told The Associated Press on Tuesday that Acevedo was going to surrender to police. The friend, Derrick Hamilton, said Acevedo was meeting with a lawyer first. Acevedo told the New York Daily News that he was speeding down a residential street in Brooklyn's Williamsburg section early Sunday because he was fleeing a gunman who was trying to shoot him.
