Multiplayer and Warzone got some new content that sounds pretty cool, but the same can’t be said for Zombies. Us Zombies players got a whole bunch of minor bug fixes and two new guns, one of which isn’t even unlockable until an unspecified time later this season. There was also a very small Easter Egg added into the round-based maps that lets you complete a challenge for an upgraded weapon. It’s a small Egg, that’s not really worth talking about. So needless to say, for a final update, it’s a little underwhelming. So instead of doing a regular Season Review like I’ve done for every prior Season, I thought we’d take a look back at Vanguard Zombies, what the mode did wrong, the few things the game did right, and discover what the lasting legacy of Vanguard Zombies will be. In the end, Vanguard Zombies won’t bring people back to play its maps. It won't be remembered fondly, or even brought up in conversation outside of being the butt of a joke. However, the release of Vanguard Zombies will be one of the most pivotal moments in the evolution of this series. Vanguard Zombies’ lasting legacy will be an unambiguous, resounding rejection of anything that isn’t round-based. The Zombies community made their voices heard, and considering Treyarch changed course mid-game, I think it’s safe to say they got the message. I don’t believe we’ll never get something outside of a horde mode for the rest of time. There’s always going to be an experiment as a side-mode, and maybe we’ll get something large-scale like Outbreak alongside a horde mode in the next game, but the odds of any Zombies game releasing without a horde mode are slim to none. Treyarch asked if objective-modes were the future of Zombies, and they got an answer. Was it a question that needed to be asked? Probably not. But if you ask stupid questions, you’ll receive stupid answers.
