Mother Jailed after Newborn Tests Positive for Meth

MOBILE, Ala. (WPMI) A 4-month-old baby is recovering in the hospital after testing positive for meth. The mother, Amanda Day, is behind bars. Mobile Police said the child is listed in stable condition. MPD said Day brought her child to Providence Hospital around 10 p.m. Monday. "Upon arrival, officers with the Mobile Police Department interviewed the mother of the 4-month-old, stated she was unsure how the child ingested methamphetamine," said MPD Spokesperson Officer Terence Perkins. Day was taken into custody. Perkins said, "She was actually arrested for outstanding traffic tickets and drug paraphernalia." Authorities stated once the investigation is complete, the mother could face more charges "She could face endangering the welfare of the child along with a host of other charges," said Perkins. Records show the mother has had a few run-ins with the law. Day was once arrested for trafficking illegal drugs and manufacturing a controlled substance. "She does have a history of drug use and also possession of a controlled substance, but she was not arrested for these charges," said Perkins. "The Mobile Police Department is working along with DHR in conducting the joint investigation in how the four month old ingested this methamphetamine." According to MPD, the child is now in DHR custody.
