Sen. Durbin: Kavanaugh hearings 'very tense'

(1 Oct 2018) Now that the FBI is investigating sexual assault allegations against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, politicians need to stay out of it while the agency does its work, Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill.  said Monday at a news conference in Chicago. Durbin was among the Senate Democrats pushing aggressively for an investigation at a high-wattage Judiciary Committee hearing last week with Kavanaugh and accuser Christine Blasey Ford. On Monday, he said the FBI shouldn't be "bridled." Kavanaugh's appointment and the subsequent hearings in Washington have turned into political issues in campaigns back home, with Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner calling for the process to be delayed and Democratic congressional candidates publicly backing Ford.
