It is highly contagious and can result in flu like symptoms and a classical generalized rash over the entire body. Thankfully there are vaccinations available. The chickenpox vaccine is a live vaccine and contains a small amount of weakened chickenpox-virus. The dose is adequate to stimulate your immune system to produce antibodies against it but not serious enough to cause an infection in healthy individuals. These vaccines are highly effective, especially when given during childhood. A single dose of the vaccine is 82% effective in preventing chickenpox and the number can increase to 92% after 2 doses. In addition studies have shown that 2 doses of chickenpox confer up to 10 years of protection. In Singapore, we have 3 brands of chickenpox vaccine available The first - varilrix. Second - varivax. And the third is a combination vaccination together with mumps, measles and rubella called priorix-tetra, Now these vaccines are highly recommended and in Singapore, they have already been included into our Singapore National Childhood immunization schedule. The first dose is recommended at 12 months of age and the second dose can be done 3 months later. All eligible Singaporean children would be able to receive their chickenpox vaccine for free since November 2020 at all polyclinics and CHAS private family medical clinics in Singapore. For adults above the age of 18 who have not been previously vaccinated or have not had the infection yet, it is also recommended that you have the vaccination , 2 doses, 4 to 8 weeks apart. Even this is heavily subsidized in polyclinics and CHAS accredited private clinics. It should not be given however if you are allergic to the vaccine currently pregnant or planning to become pregnant weakened immune system due to HIV or chemotherapy from cancer or on drugs like high dose steroids blood disorders or blood malignancy like leukemia and lymphoma concurrent febrile illnesses. Also if you have just been exposed to the virus and if you haven’t already caught chickenpox or received the vaccination yet, then the CDC advisory committee on immunization practices does recommend that you receive the chickenpox vaccination within 3-5 days as it may prevent the infection or make it less severe. Some of the common side effects are injection site pain, redness and swelling fever post vaccination fainting spells post vaccination and allergies In general, these are mild and recover by themselves. If you develop rare but serious allergies like swollen face, eyes, lips and tongue difficulty in breathing generalized skin rash Then be sure to seek medical consultation right away 00:00 Intro 00:47 Brands of vaccine 02:06 Vaccination schedules 03:25 Side effects of vaccine #chickenpox #chickenpoxvaccine #SgDrWellness #Vitacarefamily #Fitivate #CSKaesthetics #DrChenYiming #Singaporedoctor #Youtube #Singaporeclinic #Familymedicine #Healthiswealth #preventionisbetterthancure #Singapore
