Asia Location, Political Divisions and Physical Features - Geography Chapter 6, ICSE Class 8

https://plz.in/c8geography6 Asia is the world’s largest continent, covering nearly 30% of the Earth's land surface and stretching across all heat zones. It is frequently described as a "continent of contrasts" because it contains geographic extremes, such as Mount Everest (the highest peak) and the Dead Sea (the lowest point), alongside some of the world's hottest, coldest, wettest, and driest places. Geographically, it is located almost entirely in the Northern and Eastern Hemispheres and is bordered by the Arctic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans. Politically, Asia is made up of 48 countries divided into six regional groups, such as South Asia and the Far East. The continent's physical landscape is centered around the Central Mountain Mass, where young fold mountain ranges like the Himalayas radiate from central points called "knots" (the Pamir and Armenian knots). This region also features the Plateau of Tibet, which is called the "roof of the world" because it is the highest plateau on Earth. Other major physical divisions include the vast Siberian Plain in the north and the ancient, hard-rock plateaus of the south, like the Arabian and Deccan Plateaus. The continent is also defined by its mighty river valleys, including the Yangtze, Ganga, and Tigris-Euphrates, which created fertile plains that supported the world's earliest civilizations. Its drainage system is categorized by rivers that flow into the surrounding oceans or into inland seas, such as the Amu Darya flowing into the Aral Sea. Finally, Asia includes many archipelagos (island groups) like Indonesia and Japan; many of these islands are actually volcanic peaks located in the Pacific Ring of Fire, a region where earthquakes and volcanic eruptions occur frequently. Analogy: You can think of Asia as a giant, diverse city. The mountain knots are like busy central hubs where all the main roads (mountain ranges) begin, the river valleys are the fertile gardens where the first neighborhoods were built, and the extreme landscapes—from icy plains to hot deserts—are the different climate-controlled rooms that make this city the most varied place on Earth.
