China Aid Crucial to Solving North Korea Issues
(13 Jan 2016) Analysts on North Korea and China were on Capitol Hill Wednesday morning to testify before the House Foreign Affairs Committee regarding the recent nuclear bomb test by Pyongyang. Commenting on the nuclear instability in the region, Victor Cha, Korea Chair at the Center for Strategic International Studies noted the scary scenario of a miscalculation on the part of North Korea. He suggested that such a miscalculation could lead to Pyongyang hurling a nuclear weapon at South Korea or Japan. Bonnie Glaser of the China Power Project at CSIS suggested that the United States might be able to raise the pressure on Beijing in an effort to enlist the Chinese government in helping reduce tensions in the region. She added that negotiations with South Korea for a missile defense system supplied by the United States might just be enough motivation to convince Beijing to act. Last week, Pyongyang announced it had successfully tested its first hydrogen bomb - its fourth nuclear test overall - although no full independent confirmation has been made of the test.
