The Dirty Dozen - Twelve Foods to Buy Organic UK

One of my key values when it comes to nutrition and food is opting for quality over quantity when at all possible. And for me, this applies to organic foods as well. I often get asked if I everything I purchase and eat is organic, and the answer is NO. Unfortunately, it is not always affordable, available or necessary. What I do abide by, is the “dirty dozen” and the “clean fifteen”, two lists that highlight the best and least necessary foods to buy organic. In this episode, I share with you my thoughts on buying organic and the twelve foods reported by the Organic Pesticide Action Network in the UK that are best to purchase organic. This list shows us the top twelve foods, when tested, that came back with the highest levels of residual pesticides and chemicals. Although the consensus is out for a lot of us when it comes to whether organic is better for us or not, many studies have linked consumption of organic produce to a reduction in negative effects from pesticides and have found that organic veggies contain more nutrients and phytochemicals. These chemicals have been linked to cancers and there is plenty of evidence that shows they can be neuro-toxic and carcinogenic for those of us who eat them. A meta-analysis in the journal Neurotoxicology found that long term exposure to a number of common pesticides significantly increased the risk of Parkinson’s disease and studies in adults and children have also linked pesticide exposure to kidney, pancreatic, prostate, breast, and stomach cancers, as well as respiratory problems and depression. Although this might seem scary, if we try to follow these two lists when we do our weekly food shop, we can massively reduce our intake of pesticides without having to stick to a strict intake of only organic foods.
