Host: Nishan Sampreeth Chilkuri (@nishanchilkuri) The hashtag #BestCMOfTheWorld is trending on twitter. Indians from different states are posting pictures of their favorite Chief Minister and making their case as to why they are better than other Chief Ministers. While there’s no universal standard that we can compare them all to, and make a judgment, let’s take a quick look at what different Chief Ministers are doing for their own states. First, let’s talk about Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao, who belongs to the TRS Party. As of today, Telangana has had over 400 positive cases, and 12 deaths. In fact Hyderabad was on of the earliest places with a positive case reported. Even before PM Narendra Modi imposed the 21-day lockdown, KCR imposed a state wide lockdown until March 31st. The government has been proactive in their efforts to make sure the lockdown doesn’t affect the public at large by making arrangements for food, and essentials, for the unfortunate. The Police department has also been active not just in enforcing the lockdown, but also in helping those in distress. YS Jagan, the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, belongs to the YSR Congress Party. AP has had 350 positive cases and 6 deaths. Recently pictures of the meals that were being served to patients in the isolation ward went viral. They were being served dry fruits, boiled eggs, and different kinds of fruit. Andhra Pradesh has now begun manufacturing rapid testing kits and ventilators, which will not just be used in the state, but will be distributed across the country. Pinarayi Vijayan, the Chief Minister of Kerala, who belongs to the Communist Party of India, has received a lot of praise for the manner in which the crisis is being handled in Kerala. It’s been 100 days since the first case was reported. There have been a total of 357 positive cases, and just two deaths. A special COVID hospital was setup. Community kitchens to feed the poor, essential supplies to all those in need, and rehabilitation of the destitute, a lot of unique measures were taken by the government. Mamata Banerjee, the Chief Minister of West Bengal belongs to Trinamul Congress Party, she has been seen several times on the field, personally monitoring the situation. She even visited a vegetable market and spoke to buyers there about social distancing. West Bengal has had 95 positive cases, and 5 deaths. She recently received criticism after it was reported the home delivery of alcohol would be permitted in Kolkata, but the news turned out to be false. Uddhav Thackeray, the Chief Minister of Maharashtra, who belongs to Shiv Sena, has been facing trying times ever since the Coronavirus crisis started. Maharashtra currently has over 1300 positive cases, and 100 have lost their lives. The deaths in Maharashtra account for 20% of all the deaths in India. Uddhav is also faced with another crisis at the moment. He is not an elected MLA. And to remain, chief minister, he had to get elected atleast as an MLC. Now because of the Coronavirus crisis, those elections have been postponed, and he’s in a bit of a fix. Arvind Kejriwal, the Chief Minister of Delhi who belongs to the Aam Aadmi Party, has been regularly taking stock of the situation, and updating the public through social media. Delhi has had over 800 positive cases, and 13 have died. What brought attention to the situation there was the recent Nizamuddin Markaz incident. Kejriwal was one of the first Chief Ministers in the country to talk about the provisions that were to be made for migrant workers during this crisis. He has now released a 5-step plan to tackle this. Yogi Adityanath, the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, belongs to the BJP, and was recently in the news because of what happened on 25th March. After the nationwide lockdown was announced, Yogi was seen participating in a religious event, and drew a lot of criticism for it. Uttar Pradesh has recorded 395 positive cases, 4 have died, and over 30 have recovered. Captain Amrinder Singh, the Chief Minister of Punjab, belongs to the Congress Party, and just today, announced an extension in the lockdown until May 1st. He has set up a 15 member task force to formulate a strategy on how to exit the lockdown. Punjab has had 116 positive cases and 11 deaths. Every state in India is working hard to fight this crisis. Let us hope and stand together as one nation, while this is taken care of. Stay indoors, follow lockdown rules, and wash your hands.
