One of the pioneers of Black feminism, the late bell hooks uses Sistes of the Yam to prescribe ways in which Black women can take back their self-determination and affirm their desires, dreams, and aspirations. She writes about joy, rebuilding self-esteem, and unlearning many of the negative things Black women are often taught about themselves in childhood. While speaking clearly and truthfully to Black women, there is much to be gained from this work by anyone who does not identify as a Black woman. Much like any work produced by hooks, Sisters of the Yam brings clearer context to the ideologies of both Black feminism and feminism.
