Of course it’s true that God can read our thoughts, but praying helps us to be closer to Him so we can grow our relationship and make it stronger. James (4:8) tells us, “Come near to God and He will come near to you.” When we pray, we show God that we rely on Him to guide our lives and do what is best for us. Our family and friends are gifts from God! When we pray for others who are having difficult experiences, we show God how much we care about them, and how thankful we are that they are in our lives. Prayer shows our strong faith that God is there even though we can’t see Him. Prayer also helps us focus on God, whether we are sharing our worries, asking for forgiveness, or saying ‘thank you’ for His many blessings. Jesus prayed often to His Heavenly Father. Since Jesus is our example, we want to do the same. In Matthew (6:9-13), Jesus specifically told us to pray for the kingdom to come both on earth AND in Heaven. So, why do we pray if God already knows our thoughts? God is pleased when we pray, but prayer is very good for us, too! It helps build our relationship with God and brings us closer to Him. Prayer strengthens our faith when we think about all of the things we want to share with Him. Plus, we want to be just like Jesus and copy HIS actions of praying to God!
