Players control Donkey Kong as he travels underground with a young Pauline to recover stolen banana-shaped diamonds from a group of villainous apes. The gameplay is similar to Super Mario Odyssey (2017), featuring sandbox-style levels where players complete objectives, fight enemies, and collect items. One key feature of Bananza is its destructible environments—players can destroy most of the terrain to create new paths and discover hidden objects. Bananza is the first Donkey Kong game developed internally by Nintendo since Donkey Kong Jungle Beat (2004). Development began after Odyssey was completed and initially started on the original Switch. However, it later moved to the Switch 2 to better support the game’s concepts. The voxel-based technology used in parts of Odyssey was expanded significantly in Bananza, enabling the creation of large, destructible worlds that highlight Donkey Kong’s power. The soundtrack features new compositions alongside rearranged music by David Wise and Grant Kirkhope from Rare’s classic Donkey Kong games. Donkey Kong Bananza was released on July 17, 2025. It is the first original Donkey Kong game since Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze (2014), and the first 3D Donkey Kong platformer since Donkey Kong 64 (1999).
