The Syrian government and opposition have agreed to discuss a possible deal this weekend to provide humanitarian access to the besieged city of Homs as part of confidence building measures. The UN mediator for the Syrian peace talks Lakhdar Brahimi is encouraged by the discussions he's had so far. "We never expected it to be easy and it is sure it is not going to be. But I think that the two parties understand what is at stake," said Brahimi at a news conference on Friday evening. "The huge ambition of this process is to save Syria, no less than that. So I hope that all three parties: the government, the opposition and the United Nations will be up to the task." If a deal can be reached during discussions over the weekend, relief aid to Homs could begin as early as Monday.
