These days I’m performing Bruckner’s 7th symphony with the San Francisco Symphony. In fact, we are taking it on Asia tour for most of November 2016. As I get to know the piece more deeply, and get to know how San Francisco Symphony approaches it, I wanted to make a video to share my thoughts. Listening to Bruckner’s 7th is like watching a sunset because of the grand scope of the event. A huge cosmic environment full of beauty, cycles, evolutions, whirling eddies of sound and color - as much as that is a sunset, it is also the music of Bruckner. Edo de Wart, my old music director in Hong Kong Philharmonic, said that “Mahler wrote about humanity; Bruckner wrote about God”. This can be understood in many ways: For one, there is little or no human drama in Bruckner’s symphonic music. It is grand and harmonious and significant, sometimes richly dark, but in my opinion there is not much pathos or silliness or sarcasm. Further, more than most situations, the music demands that the orchestral performer focuses on the team as a whole, on blending, rather than playing very soloistically. The collaboration involved in performing Bruckner 7 is a beautiful example of symphonic teamwork at its highest. Ears and eyes open, passing melodies and harmonies around the orchestra, it is a magnificent experience which feels very much to me like communing with the universe. See me play horn with San Francisco Symphony performing Bruckner 7 at Davies Hall on November 2,3, and 4, 2016, or on tour in Asia. Hear the sunset!
