Anger at rail fare increase despite government plea for people to return to the workplace

Rail commuters face a 1.6pc rise in season ticket prices in January. The cap on the annual rise in most regulated fares is linked to the previous July’s Retail Prices Index measure of inflation, which came in at a 12-month reading of 1.6pc this morning. Rail fares are usually increased every January, although there is speculation ministers are considering delaying the 2021 rise due to low passenger numbers.
