I almost didn't make it to Spiti. I was stuck for a week in Kalpa due to an unexpected snowstorm. With the highways blocked by snow, and massive landslides, then missing the bus, and traveling in a car which just wasn’t meant for this season, it’s miraculous that I actually made it to Spiti Valley. The entire Spiti Valley with without electricity for a week when we reached, and temperatures dropped to -25°C on the first night itself, this trip felt challenging even for a seasoned traveller like me at the start. However as the days passed, I got used to the snow and cold, and yet this trip to Spiti became one of the most extraordinary trips of my life! Yes, there was a lot that I wanted to do, but couldn’t due to blocked roads. But this trip made me slow down like I rarely do, pause and soak the beauty of Spiti even more. Everything in the end resulted in an unplanned trip that ended up being magical. This video is my honest account of what it's really like to travel to Spiti in the heart of winter. Not the Instagram version. The real one - where nature is in charge, and you're just along for the ride. 00:00 Introduction 01:22 Journey to Spiti Valley 03:33 Stopover in Nako 04:34 Stopover in Tabo 07:04 Homestay in Spiti 10:30 History of Spiti Valley 12:44 Exploring Kaza 15:14 Dhankar Monastery 18:33 Breakfast at Homestay 21:12 Chicham Bridge 22:33 Key Monastery 28:46 Exploring Rangrik in Spiti If you're planning a winter trip to Spiti, here's what I learnt the hard way: A 4x4 vehicle with snow chains is non-negotiable in winter - don't make the mistake we did Carry cash - ATMs are unreliable and connectivity is sparse Power cuts lasting days are common after heavy snowfall - a power bank and warm layers are essential Roads can close without warning due to snowfall or landslides - build buffer days into your itinerary Winter Spiti is raw, challenging, and deeply rewarding - but go prepared or don't go As this journey comes to an end, one thing is certain—this wasn’t just my first trip to Spiti… and it won’t be the last. I will return. Maybe in summer. Maybe for longer. Because some places don’t let you go.
