The blue chip Hang Seng Index fell as much as 6.1 percent to 23,283.97 during the morning. It was down 1,339.24 points at 23,469.46 at the close. Analysts said Wednesday's decline was partly due to investors aggressively selling off stocks in reaction to the additional risks associated with the long weekend. On Tuesday, the Dow Jones industrial average dropped 370 points, or 2.93 percent overnight - its largest one-day percentage drop since it lost 3.3 percent on February 27, 2007.
