The proposed India–U.S. trade deal has sparked confusion after multiple revisions to a White House fact sheet revealed discrepancies between American claims and India's official position. Initially, the U.S. document stated that India would slash tariffs on pulses and commit to purchasing $500 billion worth of American goods over five years—points that were either absent or described differently in the joint statement, which used the word "intends" rather than "commits." Within 24 hours, the White House updated the document, removing references to pulses and replacing “committed” with "intends." It also dropped mention of American farm products under the $500 billion clause and softened language suggesting India would end its digital services tax, instead stating that both sides would negotiate digital trade rules. While these changes suggest behind-the-scenes negotiations or possible overstatements, uncertainty remains—especially as the U.S. continues to claim that India will stop buying Russian oil, a point New Delhi has not confirmed. With only a trade framework currently in place and a final agreement expected next month, the back-and-forth has fueled political confrontation at home and created confusion among farmers, exporters, and investors, underscoring the need for clarity once the final deal is signed.
