Trump’s Santa Calls Go Political as He Talks Elections, Coal and GDP With Children
President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump marked Christmas Eve at Mar-a-Lago by taking part in NORAD’s annual Santa tracking calls, a long-standing holiday tradition. Seated near a Christmas tree, the first couple spoke with children across the United States for more than 20 minutes, answering questions and spreading festive cheer. But the calls quickly took on a political tone. Trump asked children what they wanted from Santa while also praising states he claimed to have won in the 2024 election and boasting about the latest US GDP figures. Speaking to reporters in the room, Trump joked that children were probably not interested in economic data, even as he continued to reference it. Several remarks stood out. Trump told a child from Oklahoma that Santa was being tracked to ensure there was no “bad Santa” infiltrating the country, and urged the child never to leave the state. When a child said they did not want coal, Trump quipped about “clean, beautiful coal.” In another call, he claimed he won Pennsylvania three times, despite losing the state in 2020.
