How to Test Your Balance: Physical Therapist Recommended Self-Assessment/ At Home Balance Test

Balance is the ability to stay upright and in coordinated control of our body. It is our ability to keep our center of mass over our base of support. In this simple static balance test you can assess your ability. If you are able to hold this position for 10 seconds, this is considered normal. For a more challenging test, close your eyes and hold for 10 seconds. Whether it's daily activities like walking or climbing stairs or more dynamic activities like sports, balance is the building block that allows us to perform optimally. Fall risk is something to consider when assessing balance. If your balance is significantly compromised, make sure to hold on to a stable object when attempting this test. Balance can be improved with simple daily practice. The test can also be the exercise in this case.
