Maya (or Maiia) Khromykh participated in the 2021 Russian Senior Test Skates, an annual event where Russia’s top figure skaters showcase their programs for the upcoming season to judges and the public. The event took place on September 11-12, 2021, at the Ice Arena Traktor in Chelyabinsk, Russia, ahead of the 2021–22 competitive season, which was significant as it led into the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing. The women's short program was held on September 11, 2021, and Khromykh skated in the first group alongside Elizaveta Nugumanova, Daria Usacheva, Sofia Samodurova, and Kseniia Sinitsyna. At the 2021 Russian Test Skates, Khromykh debuted her short program for the 2021–22 season. This was the same short program she had used in the previous season, set to "I'll Take Care of You" by Beth Hart and Joe Bonamassa, choreographed by Daniil Gleikhengauz. Her decision to retain this program proved to be a smart move, as it had matured significantly since its initial outing. At the test skates, she delivered a clean and confident performance, showcasing her long limbs and balletic movements that flowed seamlessly with the music. The program featured a double Axel, a triple Lutz-triple toe loop combination, and a triple flip, all executed with notable poise and artistry. While test skates are not scored officially, her performance stood out for its polish and emotional connection, earning praise from fans and observers. Khromykh’s appearance at the test skates marked her transition to the senior level internationally, following a strong 2020–21 season where she had landed quad jumps (a quad toe loop and a quad Salchow) at the Russian Cup Final. At the 2021 test skates, she did not attempt quads in her short program—quads are not permitted in short programs under ISU rules—but her free skate later in the event included a cleanly landed quad toe loop, though she popped a planned quad Salchow into a single. Her short program performance, however, was a highlight, signaling her readiness to compete with Russia’s elite, including Anna Shcherbakova, Alexandra Trusova, Alena Kostornaia, Elizaveta Tuktamysheva, and Kamila Valieva, all of whom were also present and vying for Olympic spots. 00:00 Practice 1 00:19 Practice 2 00:43 Practice 3 01:16 Practice 4 01:47 Performance
