NIGHT SHOTS explosions at Israeli military outpost STORYLINE Palestinian militants fired home-made rockets at the Israeli border town outside Sderot on Monday, killing a 50-year-old Israeli man and a three year-old boy near the toddler's nursery. The rocket exploded in the early morning while children were being dropped off for nursery school. Seven people, including the toddler's mother, were wounded in the rocket attack. Islamic militant group Hamas claimed responsibility. It was the first time in nearly four years of fighting that Israelis were killed by rockets from Gaza, and harsh Israeli retaliation is expected. Prime Minister Ariel Sharon called an emergency Cabinet meeting for later on Monday - an indication that he would seek special approval for military action. However, the burst of attacks was not expected to disrupt Sharon's plan to withdraw from Gaza by the end of 2005. Sharon has said a withdrawal is crucial for Israel's security and that he is determined to go ahead. He was also quoted to have said in a closed-door meeting on Monday that he has decided to speed up the voluntary evacuation of settlers from the Gaza Strip. Participants said the prime minister told parliament's Defence and Foreign Affairs Committee that settlers wishing to leave Gaza voluntarily would receive a down payment on compensation. Hamas has fired dozens of rockets in recent years, frequently targeting Sderot which is close to Gaza, and just a kilometre (mile) from Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's desert ranch. The violence came a day after Palestinian militants blew up an army outpost in the heart of the Gaza Strip. The blast brought down a building. Ambulances came under Palestinian fire as they evacuated the wounded. Five others were wounded.
