Recent developments, particularly India's suspension of the Indus Water Treaty (1960), have intensified the discussion of bringing this water to Rajasthan. After the Pahalgam terror attack (22 April 2025), India accused Pakistan of supporting terrorism and in retaliation suspended the Indus Water Treaty. Under this treaty, the water of the Indus and its tributaries (Jhelum, Chenab, Ravi, Beas, Sutlej) was shared between India and Pakistan, with Pakistan getting 80% and India getting 20%. India announced that it would no longer give "a single drop of water" to Pakistan. Union Jal Shakti Minister CR Patil said that India would fully utilise its share of water, especially for irrigation and power generation in Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, and Rajasthan. Extension of Indira Gandhi Canal: This canal, which starts from Harike Barrage in Punjab, carries water to the western districts of Rajasthan (Sriganganagar, Hanumangarh, Bikaner, Jodhpur, and Barmer). The government is now planning to transport the excess water of Indus and Sutlej to Barmer and Jaisalmer through this canal. Use of Saraswati River: The governments of Rajasthan and Haryana are considering bringing Indus water to Marudhara (western Rajasthan) by using the ancient route of Saraswati River. Saraswati River exploration and regeneration projects are underway. Shahpurkandi Project: This project will intercept the water of Ravi River and use it for irrigation and power generation in Jammu and Kashmir and Rajasthan.
