Why I voted against the disastrous Immigration Bill (18 May 2020)

This is the second time in a decade that the Conservatives have retrospectively removed the rights of migrants even after they’ve settled in the UK.‬ ‪In 2014, they pulled the rug out from underneath Commonwealth citizens, leading to the #WindrushScandal‬. Now they're done the same to EU citizens #ImmigrationBill. Their current plans make little economic sense either. Under Government proposals, as many as 69% of EU workers in the UK would be ineligible for a visa. Without a plan to increase these workers’ wages, this will be a disaster for many sectors - health & social care, construction, transport - leaving us short of #KeyWorkers. We should be ending the #HostileEnvironment, not extending its key provisions to EU citizens and placing thousands more at risk of detention, deportation, data sharing, no recourse to public funds, salary thresholds. We need a fair immigration policy that benefits our economy, upholds human rights and spells the end of the #HostileEnvironment. The Government's #ImmigrationBill does none of those things.
