Cellular Jail also known as Kala Pani was constructed to deal effectively with the freedom fighters who revolted against the British rule during India's first war of independence. Spread as seven spokes of a bicycle wheel, this unique three storied structure was the first of its kind in India.Three wings on the back side are small as it is closer to the Sea. Vinayak Damodar Savarkar The Famous Veer Savarkar Cell is located in the 2nd Floor of cellular Jail. Vinayak Damodar Savarkar was imprisoned in this cell from 1911 to 1921. Vinayak Damodar Savarkar was a Freedom Fighter, Politician, Lawyer, Writer and Social Reformer. Indira Gandhi, the then prime ministe of India named Savarkar as the Remarkable Son of India and a stamp was released on 28th May 1970 to commemorate the Birth Anniversary of Savarkar Work Shed Work sheds, constructed between every two radiating wings of the cellular jail were meant for engaging the prisoners in different types of tasks such as oil extraction and rope making under the watchful eyes of cruel wardens and petty officers. Political prisoners were required to produce a daily quota of 30 pounds of coconut oil and 10 pounds of Mustard oil, that were beyond their physical capacity. Punishments were followed for those who failed to meet the quota. There are 4 special condemned cell for keeping prisoners before hanging. This is located very close to the Hanging Cell. Port Blair and Netaji Subash Chandra Bose Port Blair was the first Indian Territory liberated from imperial British rule. In 1943-44 during the World War II, Japan Captured this territory and it served as the headquarters of the Azad Hind Govt under Netaji Subash Chandra Bose. Netaji accompanied by the members of the Azad Hind Govt and his staff had paid an official visit to the Andaman Islands in 1943. On 30th December 1943 Netaji addressed a mass rally in Andaman and hoisted the Tricolor for the first time at Gymkhana Ground in Port Blair. On Dec 30 1943, Netaji also suggested to rename Andaman and Nicobar Islands as Shaheed and Swaraj Dweep respectively.
