The asylum got its name from the mother of the founder Amadeus Arkham. When he became the owner of the island, only the mansion and the botanical gardens were there. When his wife and daughter was killed by the insane Martin Hawkins, also called Mad Dog, he decided to try and help instead of going down a darker path. That's how the island got its first patient and Amadeus started his career as a treater of the insane. All worked well and finally one day Amadeus Arkham deemed the Mad Dog sane enough to be released. Before he was let off the island, he killed Amadeus' secretary with a fountain pen and escaped to the botanical gardens where he desecrated the statue erected as a memory of the murdered family of Amadeus. After that, Amadeus quickly lost his sanity himself, but before he himself got locked up in his own asylum, he tortured the Mad Dog to death. In the years after the institution expanded greatly, with both a penitentiary and other large buildings. Among other psychiatrists did both Dr. Jonathan Crane and Dr. Harleen Quinzel work at Arkham Asylum. Two persons who later would become more famous under different names. Continue to follow Batman and Robin when they fight crimes both on the streets of Gotham City and the air above. Get to know the ins and outs of the Batcave and Arkham Asylum.
