Asphalt Shingles over Wood Shingles

ROOF SUMMARY: This steep asphalt shingle roof was installed over the top of old wood shingles. This is very common in Northern California. The problem is that doing this greatly decreases the expected life of the new roof on top. Because the surface isn't flat the shingles can much more easily warp, curl and slip out of place. The nails tend to easily come out of the wood shingles too allowing the asphalt shingles to slip out of place as can be seen. It is also much more susceptible to wind damage. We will often see that the vents are buried under both the wood shingles and asphalt shingles making them riskier for leakage.
