Extreme Heat, Monsoon Rains Trigger Massive Floods in Pakistan | GB Glaciers, Lahore Submerged

Pakistan is facing a dual climate emergency as extreme heat in Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) and heavy monsoon rains in Punjab have unleashed widespread flooding across the country. In the northern regions, record-breaking temperatures have triggered glacier lake outburst floods (GLOFs), particularly from the Shishper Glacier. Gilgit-Baltistan Disaster Management Authority (GBDMA) has confirmed road blockages, damaged homes, and evacuations in districts including Hunza, Diamer, Chilas, and Nagar. Chilas recorded a staggering 48.5°C — the highest since 1997. The Karakoram Highway remains closed in several areas. Meanwhile in Punjab, urban flooding has paralyzed major cities like Lahore. Intense rainfall submerged key roads including Jail Road and Liberty Chowk. WASA teams are working round-the-clock to clear drains while the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) preps relief camps and emergency services. Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has ordered all departments to stay on alert, monitor weather conditions, and manage traffic during what could be a prolonged and intense monsoon season. Experts warn that with continued climate volatility and above-average rainfall forecasts, the situation may worsen in coming weeks. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dawn News English is your window into the latest news, insight, and features from South Asia and beyond.
